LOCAL COUNTIES, CITIES, TOWNS LEAVING UNCLAIMED MONEY ON THE TABLE
Many local cities, towns, and counties are facing financial challenges, so why aren’t they claiming available funds?
Each year, thousands of New Yorkers discover money in their name on the New York State Comptroller’s unclaimed funds website. However, we’ve found that many local governments are not always taking advantage of this unclaimed cash.
For instance, the city of Schenectady appears multiple times on the unclaimed funds website. When asked about this, Mayor Gary McCarthy admitted he wasn’t aware of the current listings but confirmed that the city does check the site annually and has claimed funds in the past.
Albany County also has several listings. County Executive Dan McCoy expressed enthusiasm at the possibility of collecting some of the unclaimed money, though he noted that while county officials have checked the site, the funds listed aren't always actually county-owned. He declined to provide further details.
Interestingly, listings can also be found for the NYS Senate, Assembly, and even the Governor. Other notable individuals with unclaimed funds include Mick Jagger, Jeff Bezos, John Grisham, and Andre Agassi.
