ARE YOU OWED MONEY? NEVADA’S UNCLAIMED PROPERTY LIST HOLDS NEARLY $1 BILLION
Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak signed legislation on Tuesday aimed at making it easier and faster for Nevadans to recover their unclaimed property.
The State Treasurer’s Office currently holds nearly $1 billion in unclaimed funds, which include uncashed checks, dormant bank accounts, and other "missing money." By law, the office safeguards these assets until their rightful owners can be found, and there is no fee to reclaim them.
Senate Bill 71, the newly signed law, enables the treasurer’s office to initiate claims on behalf of individuals, rather than requiring them to start the process themselves. This initiative began as a pilot during the pandemic to help Nevadans access any available funds that might provide financial relief.
“I’m proud to sign Senate Bill 71, which will ensure thousands of Nevadans can swiftly receive the funds that are rightfully theirs,” Sisolak said in a statement. “The improvements in this bill will help ensure that those in need of a little extra assistance can more easily access their unclaimed property.”
According to the governor, the treasurer’s office, in partnership with DETR, returned over $2 million to individuals impacted by the pandemic. In total, the office returned nearly $50 million in unclaimed property last year.
